City music service evening ensembles

The City Music Service works in partnership with Stoke-on-Trent schools to offer a wide variety of musical opportunities for over 8000 young people aged 2–18 each week.

There are a range of exciting evening activities for young musicians to participate in which include choirs, string orchestras, wind bands, brass bands, recorder, percussion and folk ensembles as well as theory lessons. All of the activities are free of charge. Like-minded and enthusiastic young musicians attend the ensembles and develop many musical skills as well as increasing their confidence and self-esteem.

  • Young people will be able to:
  • Make more progress by learning to perform with pupils of a similar ability
  • Enjoy the benefit of working with highly skilled teachers from the City Music Service team
  • Enjoy playing and singing in a positive environment
  • Develop their musical skills
  • Enjoy meeting and socialising with other young musicians
  • Gain confidence and raise self-esteem
  • Progress through the groups at an appropriate pace
  • Perform in concerts and other events

Parking is available at the rear of the building. Please observe the 5mph speed limit in the grounds.

Attendance and responsibilities

Regular attendance at all of the groups is essential in order for young people to make progress. A full commitment is needed from young people, with support from parents/carers, particularly with regard to rehearsals and concerts. In the case of absence it would be helpful if you could notify the service by telephoning the office and tutors will be notified. All young people are expected to show respect for their fellow musicians, their teachers and the building. Young people are eligible to perform in more than one group at the discretion of their teachers.
