Support and training to become a childminder
Are you interested in becoming a childminder? if so we have a dedicated and experienced team that can help you to achieve your ambition.
If you would like to work with children and help to give them the best start in life, being a registered childminder could be the ideal job for you.
As a registered childminder you will:
- offer the children you care for a happy and inspirational environment
- see the children that you care for grow and develop
- work in your home, choosing the hours you work and the services you provide
- have a career where no two days are the same
- care for your own children at the same time if you have a family
- meet other childcare professionals in your area and get to know your local community
Childminders are:
- registered to look after one or more children under the age of eight, for more than two hours a day on domestic premises (normally their own home) for any kind of reward
- registered by Ofsted and inspected at regular intervals to ensure every childminder meets the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) requirements
Find out more information by reading Ofsted’s childminding presentation
You do not need to have any qualifications to be a childminder; however you may have to attend a childminder pre-registration training course. Stoke-on-Trent City Council runs this course.
Request a place on Stoke on Trent's Childminder pre-registration course
It covers:
- the Early Years Foundation Stage requirements
- safeguarding level one training
- paediatric first aid training
The early years team supports you through registration and ongoing throughout your time as a childminder.
If you have already attended training about the Early Years Foundation Stage and have good knowledge, then you may not have to attend the pre-registration training.
